Biography

Nicholas Benson has directed the IISC since August 2012, and in August 2014 became the Provost's Office of Outreach & Engagement's Director of Community Development and Outreach. He shapes the university's outreach initiatives by leading the IISC and other programs of the office, engaging departments across the university and communities throughout the state in mutually beneficial partnerships that innovate on both the university's public mission and the challenges facing Iowa's cities and small towns.

Prior to beginning this position, Benson was the Community Development Project Coordinator and Economic Development intern at the City of Iowa City Planning Department. Benson attended law school at the University of Iowa, graduating in 2010, and is a licensed attorney in the state of Iowa. His areas of professional interest include economic and community development, sustainable development, civic engagement and land use law.
