Manning Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan

As part of his graduate capstone project, Sports & Recreation management student Thomas Harder collaborated with the Manning Parks and Recreation department on a strategic plan for their community recreation center and ballfields.

In the past few years, the City of Manning’s Parks and Recreation Department’s assets have evolved dramatically. However, a comprehensive strategic plan had never been put in place for recreation aspects of the city.  Community leaders sought assistance for developing a strategic plan to determine long-term strategy and short-term actions and goals relating to the department’s assets. Two subject areas were included in the strategic plan.

Residents of Manning enjoy access to a rec center that includes a six lane indoor pool and hot tub and 24-hour access to the exercise room, racquetball court and gym. The Rec Center primarily hosts youth oriented programming. The strategic plan identified ways to grow the Rec Center, including programming, equipment and facility improvements. This includes Hillside splash, an aquatic facility in the fundraising stage. It will connect to the indoor pool.

The department owns and manages two little league baseball/softball fields and two youth soccer/football fields. The strategic plan recommended enhancements to current programs and offerings and recommended new programs and offerings. The strategic plan recommended improvements to the current physical facilities and recommended expansions.
