Clinton LumberKings / Downtown Clinton Alliance Strategic Partnership Plan

Students in the Department of Health and Human Physiology's Sports and Recreation Management Program recommended strategies to enhance the partnership between the Clinton LumberKings minor league baseball organization and the Downtown Clinton Alliance.

Clinton, Iowa has a community asset that few cities around the country can claim- a community-owned professional minor league baseball team.  The Clinton LumberKings are a Class A Minor League team currently affiliated with MLB's Miami Marlins, and the history of the team dates back to the late 19th century.  The team's stadium has also long been a landmark in Clinton, located just next to the main downtown district.

In collaboration with LumberKings General Manager Ted Tornow, the Downtown Clinton Alliance, and the City of Clinton, two graduate students in Sports & Recreation Management explored ways to strengthen connections between the baseball organization and downtown Clinton.  The students developed several recommendations designed to both support operations for the LumberKings, with the ultimate goal of boosting attendance, and to increase economic activity downtown through marketing of existing businesses and recruitment of new businesses.
