Granger - Community Park and Recreation Center Designs and Plans
As part of their Senior Design Capstone course, Civil & Environmental Engineering students will create designs and plans for a 26-acre park and recreation building in Granger, Iowa.
The City of Granger plans to develop a new park that will serve as a community hub for recreation, sports, and outdoor activities. The City is seeking engineering designs that establish a plan for the park while identifying opportunities for phased implementation. The project will create a comprehensive site design that balances recreation, accessibility, environmental stewardship, and long-term sustainability.
The design team will evaluate existing site conditions, including topography, drainage, utilities, and development constraints to develop a site design for the park. The conceptual design will include a variety of recreational features, including a destination fishing pond, accessible walking trails, athletic fields, an inclusive playground, park shelter, and supporting amenities. The team will also develop a conceptual recreation center that may include indoor basketball and volleyball courts, walking facilities, community gathering space, offices, locker rooms, and other flexible recreation amenities that support residents of all ages.
The design team will:
- Evaluate existing site conditions, grading, drainage, utilities, and development constraints.
- Develop a comprehensive park design that supports phased implementation.
- Design accessible recreational facilities that serve users of all ages and abilities.
- Incorporate sustainable site development practices, stormwater management, and ecological enhancements into the park design.
- Balance recreation, environmental stewardship, and long-term maintenance considerations.
- Prepare engineering recommendations that support future funding applications and implementation.
Deliverables may include:
- Existing conditions assessment and site analysis.
- Comprehensive conceptual park and recreation center design and plans.
- Phased development strategy.
- Stormwater management, grading, and site drainage recommendations.
