West Branch – Public Tree Inventory

As part of the ICIGO student organization within the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability, students conducted an on-site tree study and created a GIS-based digital inventory tool for city-owned trees in West Branch, Iowa.

ICIGO students built a GIS-based tool and created a tree inventory, including geolocations and tree characteristics. Students visited West Branch for multiple site visits to locate and assess trees to enter into the database.  The tool and a how-to guide will be provided to the City to continue to use. The tree inventory will help City of West Branch officials maintain a safe and healthy stock of public trees, prioritize Public Works staff time and resources, and create a long-term management and funding plan for community trees.

Details about the project and tree maps are shared in this StoryMap.
