West Branch - Scattergood Friends School & Farm Governance Study

A team of students in the College of Law's Community Empowerment Law Project will support Scattergood Friends School & Farm in a process evaluate models of self-governance.

Scattergood Friends School & Farm is a nonprofit, Quaker school located in West Branch, Iowa.  The school emphasizes inclusive, self-driven, and experiential learning that honors the Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship.  The campus serves youth grades 6-12, both day students and boarding students, and has an organic farm, restored prairie, and pond.

Scattergood was founded in 1890 by the Iowa Yearly Meeting (Conservative) as a Quaker school to educate the children of the IYMC families. Currently, Scattergood has three branches:  Scattergood School and its administration; IYMC, the governing body; and the Scattergood Foundation. While Scattergood seeks to maintain systems that will maintain Quaker connections and practices, College of Law will engage staff and stakeholders to understand alternative governance structures to best meet the evolving needs of the school.
