As part of the ICIGO student organization within the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability, students will partner with Lyon County to develop a GIS-based inventory and map of existing trails throughout the county and analyze opportunities to expand the trail network. The project will provide Lyon County with a picture of existing recreational trail infrastructure while identifying potential connections that could create a more cohesive county-wide system and link Lyon County to trails and communities beyond its boundaries.

Students will collect, organize, and map available data on existing trails. Building on this inventory, students will use GIS-based spatial analysis to identify areas where new trail connections could improve access and create a more connected network. The analysis will consider factors such as proximity to existing trails and destinations, land ownership, roadway crossings, accessibility, environmental and physical constraints, and connections to regional trails outside the county.
