Mississippi Riverfront Redevelopment Plan

Students surveyed best practices of community riverfront redevelopment efforts similar to what was being looked at for the redevelopment of the section of the Mississippi River in Muscatine. The students solicited community input to identify the best uses for the land, ultimately producing a plan for the riverfront.

The Mississippi River is one of Muscatine’s greatest assets. New initiatives, such as a Facade Improvement Program for buildings downtown facing the river as well as a Mississippi Drive Corridor Project seek to improve the aesthetics of the area. However, a redevelopment plan is needed to guide strategic growth along the riverfront. The four alternatives presented were to create a riverfront maintaining baseline conditions, working ecosystems, arts and industry, and fitness.
