Burlington - South Riverfront Park Redesign

For their capstone project in Civil and Environmental Engineering, a team of students created engineering and design plans for a park to be located on a former industrial site. Located adjacent to the Mississippi River, the project had several obstacles, notably possible soil contamination and flooding. The team reviewed the site, selected amenities that worked with these challenges, and made recommendations for ways to incorporate the historic rail yard that formerly stood at the site.

Burlington seeks to extend parkland that already exists along its riverfront, transforming a now vacant space into a recreational area. City administrators asked the team for plans that would enhance public access to the Mississippi, highlight the location's natural features, and integrate elements of the area's rail history.

A significant portion of the team's plans respond to the current deficient soil and miscellaneous debris on site. They recommend removal of existing structures, including the Public Works building and scale house, as well as current concrete parking and riprap. The plan includes designs and pricing for an ADA accessible boat ramp, fish cleaning station, trail, performance pavilion, and historic railway site. They also included flood-resistant landscaping recommendations.
