Pathfinders RC&D Strategic Communications Campaign

Students in a capstone class in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications worked with Pathfinders RC&D to develop a strategic communication campaign and a vast array of resources to help the organization implement the campaign strategies.

Pathfinders Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area has 35+ years experience working with counties in south central Iowa to provide services related to place making, strategic planning, small business loans, fiscal agent services, grant writing, and grant administration. The 501c3 organization sought assistance with telling its story, sharing current and upcoming opportunities, and amplifying its work.

Journalism and Mass Communication students conducted extensive research to familiarize themselves with the Pathfinders organization and how they are perceived by key stakeholders. The groups research included interviewing members of the board of directors, past clients, and staff.  They also audited Pathfinders existing communication efforts and website. With that information, they established two goals: 1) develop a clear and consistent brand identity for Pathfinders; and 2) raise awareness of Pathfinders services among potential client and collaborators.

To support the communication strategy, the students created a variety of materials and templates, including an updated logo and a brand guide.  They provide templates for a brochure, newsletter, press release, social media posts and more.  They also filmed and edited a video to help people in the region get learn more about Pathfinders RC&D and the organization's impressive work and accomplishments.
