West Burlington Trailhead Park Design

Two urban & regional graduate students in the School of Planning & Public Affairs worked closely with the West Burlington Trails Committee to design a unique and multi-faceted trailhead park at a prominent community location.

The West Burlington Trails Committee desired a unique destination spot along their trail network and in a prominent gateway area to the community.  The committee present the graduate students with a challenge: create a trailhead park from an empty lot located on a major road with a drainage ditch running through it. The park should include basic amenities, such as a shelter, a map, a water fountain, and a bike station. And make it truly unique!

By working closely with the committee, graduate students tested creative concepts until a final vision emerged. The final design includes natural features, bicycle amenities, play structures, pubic art, and spaces for gathering.
